Rocky Horror Show

Georgia, Whitney and I spent this past Friday evening taking portraits of audience members before the midnight
showing of The Rocky Horror Show at the Wharton Center.

"When the opportunity comes, I go all out" Adam Ehrlich explained about dressing up as Rocky. "I'm an actor so
costumes are my favorite thing to play around with."

Gabe Cooper, 18, described his costume as "conflicted." He explained that it wasn't his idea to dress up.

Park Life (part II)

Park Life

This is a photo leftover from my grand trip out west. I spent an afternoon in a park in Portland Oregon shooting features
with two fellow traveling visual journalists.

Bev Graves

Just completed the VJ Multimedia Workshop at Brooks Institute. As part of the experience I was assigned a group that created multimedia over the weekend relating to the theme "Fountain of Youth." I documented Bev Graves - an 86 year old yoga instructor
who truly embodied the notion of staying young at heart. "I always say if you aren't smiling you aren't doing it right," Graves
explained about the Iyengar method of Hatha yoga. She teaches classes three days a week at Ventura Yoga Studio.

Westward

Since my last entry I turned in my gear, said my goodbyes and left the York Dispatch/the great state of PA. To contrast,
I began shooting with cheap film and have ventured west with a backpack and bicycle. These are a couple scenic shots
taken with my Minolta.

The Mastermind

This post is in honor of my last ribbon cutting assignment in York PA.

It was a rather unique event. St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church got a new elevator. They held a ribbon cutting
ceremony that included a few tears from participants, elevator rides and a cake decorated to look like the new contraption,
(complete with a red frosting bow.) Instead of having the usual PR agent, I got to learn about the details of the event from
Lavern Brenneman, pictured above. He helped create the event, is an enthusiast for St. Matthew's renovations and is a treasurer
and co-chair for the church's capitol campaign. He came prepared for my arrival with a handwritten press release containing
the four names of those who would be involved in the ceremony.

Philadelphia's Magic Gardens

In the south side of Philly, a building and neighboring vacant lot were converted into one giant mosaic.
I was visually overwhelmed by my visit, to say the least.

A Character

There is talk of closing one of York's largest employers, the Harley-Davidson Plant. I was sent to various locations to look for
employees and information. I found someone rather knowledgeable who was not a fan of the Harley brand but allowed me to take his
photo anyways. Richard Becker Jr., 38, lays on his Honda Shadow in the parking lot of Laugerman's Harley-Davidson, May 12.

The Parking Lot

Some extras from a warm weather feature a couple weeks ago. Probably should have used some fill flash for the top photo.

Above - Marcelina "Beauty" Brown, 10, front, sits on her bicycle with Trinity Betancourt in a parking lot near Penn Park.
Below - Trinity Bentancourt, 8, is tickled by her cousin, Jazleen Santiago, 13, top, and Nelson Pedrose, 10, left.

"I don't know how to act like a badass. I only know how to look like one," Frank Szymanski joked. Szymanski, 19, smokes on top of his
"G Wagon" in the woods near his parents house in Felton. He has owned his current Land Rover Discovery with custom rims since August. Szymanski said the car gives him terrible gas milage and an awesome image.

Codorus Creek

Tyrone Manley Jr. fishes a couple times a week. "I just do it for fun." He explained that he throws the fish back after catching
them. "My dad taught me. I want to teach my kids when I grow up." Manley is expecting his first child, a son, on June 29.
"I'm nervous, very nervous."

Eugene Reaugh, Vietnam veteran and retired trucker, explained that when birds fly high, it's a sign that rain is coming. "There
is a lot of unhappiness in this world," he advised. "You have to smile." Reaugh joked about being a "goofball" and old fashioned
for calling me "Ma'am."

For his blog, Andrew Shaw, education reporter extraordinaire, needed some glamor shots depicting the many uses of
his mother's snuggie.

Murder Mystery

I was walking through an alley in the city and saw this

I told one of the night reporters about it. Apparently, someone called the cops last week to report unidentified cow parts
in an alley. I guess no one has bothered to remove them yet.

Stealth

Things that distract while on assignment (part 2)

- Subtle patterns and shooting with excessive dead space -
Olivia Sharp practices her talent, sign language, during rehearsals for York County's Junior Miss Scholarship Program. Sharp will compete for scholarship money and the title of Junior Miss. Contestants are judged on scholastics, an interview, talent, fitness and self-expression.

- Other photographers -
Tammy Rinehart of Jackson Township photographs contestants practicing a choreographed fitness dance that will be performed as part of York County's Junior Miss show. Rinehart is a "Big Sister" mentor for one of the contestants.
